Umea University’s 2008 annual autumn ceremony

On Saturday 18 October, the annual autumn ceremony will be held at Umeå University. Thirteen honorary doctors, 22 new professors, and 11 award recipients will be celebrated. An international perspective will be significant as seven of the honorary doctors are from universities outside of Sweden.

The annual autumn ceremony is not only a ritual for the guests of honour but also a “festival of knowledge” for all eager to learn. A total of 44 lectures, including 16 given in English will be held on campus prior to the ceremony. The general public is welcome to attend all lectures.

The celebration launches on Thursday 16 October at 1:00 p.m. when chief librarian Kjell Jonsson inaugurates the 2008 university exhibition of the honorary doctors, new professors, and award recipients. Esteemed author and honorary doctor Yngve Ryd will discuss (in Swedish) Sanna sagor om djur (true tales about animals). Location: University Library, Study Hall.

The honorary doctors and award recipients will deliver lectures beginning on Thursday 16 October at 6:30 p.m. in lecture halls B and D, 9th level, Norrlands University Hospital. These special ceremony lectures will continue on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the large auditorium at the KBC Building and lecture halls in the Arts Building.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday 18 October, the new professors
will deliver lectures. Some selected lectures in English:
Sustainable industrial processes for the 21st century.

Hydrodynamic effects in plasma, combustion and astrophysics.
Professor Vitaly Bychkov

The Complete Schedule of lectures.

The ceremony, to be held in the Aula Nordica auditorium begins promptly at 5:00 p.m. and is expected to conclude at 7:00 p.m. A dinner banquet will be held for invited guests in the Universum restaurant.

On Friday 17 October a ceremony rehearsal will take place in Aula Nordica at 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. The guests of honour will participate with doctoral hats and wreaths. The media is welcome to attend.

All honorary doctors, professors and award recipients are presented in the festival brochure in Swedish.
